(Baptisia australis) Perennial. Native. This striking upright perennial features early deep blue, pea-like blossoms that are adored by bumblebees. Flowers are followed by ornamental black, elongated seed pods. Both the flowers and seed pods are wonderful additions to cut flower arrangements.

Historically used for making blue dyes in place of true indigo.

Planting Instructions:
Sow outdoors in late fall/early winter. For spring planting, soak seeds in hot water overnight before planting outdoors or in seed starting medium.

Additional Tips:
Wild Indigos mature slowly, taking up to 2-3 to produce flowers, but are well worth the wait.

Once established, blue wild indigo will remain healthy for several years.  It requires a minimum of maintenance in the garden.

Companion Plants:
Plant with peonies, lanceleaf coreopsis.
