(Brassica oleracea) A robust Collard that produces earlier than others. This variety produces tall (up to 32"), slick, blue-green leaves that are packed with nutrition.

The Vates Collard is slow to bolt and can withstand both hot and cold weather, but thrives when it's cooler.

An excellent choice for fall planting as it sweetens with frost.

Planting Instructions:
Start spring seedlings 4-5 weeks before transplanting. Start fall transplants 2-3 months before first frost. Transplant when 3” tall at least 90 days before your first frost in midsummer.

Additional Tips:
Collards need fertile, well-drained soil with a soil pH of 6.5 to 6.8 to discourage clubroot disease.

Work nitrogen-rich amendments such as blood meal, cottonseed meal, or composted manure into the ground before planting.

Tolerant of warmer temperatures.

Evenly moist soil will provide best chances for a healthy crop.

Harvest leaves when they are up to 10 inches long, dark green, and still young. Older leaves become tough or stringy. Pick the lower leaves first, working your way up the plant. As you harvest collard leaves from the bottom up, the lower stem will be bare, making the plant look tree-like. New leaves grow from the center through cool weather.

Companion Plants:
Plant with basil, beans, cucumber, dill, lettuce, marigold, mint, nasturtium, onion, potato, radish, rosemary, sage.
