Sow outside 1-2 weeks before average last frost. Sow up to 2 months before first fall frost.
Swiss chard makes a great alternative to spinach, especially in the summer months which spinach will tend to bolt. Makes a striking ornamental plant and is great for use in edible landscaping.
You can plant Swiss Chard in the shadier parts of your garden, and where the soil is the poorest. Swiss chard is not too picky, but it doesn't like a soil that is too acidic. A soil of around 6.5 - 6.8 is ideal.
To minimize the bitter mid-summer taste, make sure the plants get plenty of water.
Once the plant is at least 10” tall, harvest leaves as needed from the outside of the plant. More inner leaves will continue to grow. Young, tender leaves are great for salads when harvested at about 2”-3”.
