Sow outside 2-4 weeks before average last frost. Start indoors 4-5 weeks before last frost or in late summer for fall planting. For continuous harvest, stagger plantings every 2-3 weeks.
Lettuce likes cool weather and lots of moisture in rich, well drained soil. Transplanting should only be done in cool, preferably cloudy weather.
To extend harvest in warmer months, choose bolt-resistant varieties and plant lettuce where it will receive afternoon shade or cover with a shade cloth.
The key to growing crisp, sweet lettuce is to get it growing at a fast pace. That means plenty of water, and a healthy dose of nitrogen-rich fertilizer.
You can pick lettuce leaves as soon as they are big enough to use. Harvest outer leaves first for continually growth. For leaf lettuce, use a knife or sharp shears to cut the leaves straight across. Leave at least 1” at the base for regrowth. We recommend harvesting your lettuce early in the morning so the leaves or heads will still be nice and crisp.
