Start indoors 8-10 weeks before average last frost. Transplant outdoors when 2" - 4" tall. Sow outside 4-6 weeks before average last frost or as soon as the soil can be worked. For fall harvest, transplant 11 weeks before first frost.
Short-day onions produce bulbs in 11-12 hours of light, long-day onions in 14-16 hours.
Onions thrive in rich organic soil. Prior to planting, work 2 to 4 in. of compost or humus into the soil.
Onions may need lots of moisture at the beginning, but less when the bulbs are approaching full size.
When the onion tops start to turn brown on the tips and fall over they are nearly ready for harvest. Once 60% of the tops have fallen, knock the rest over. In about a week, most of the foliage will have dried and browned. Dig up onions with a garden fork and shake off any soil, but do not wash them or pull off any outside wrapper leaves. Leave them to dry cure in the garden for several days (up to 2 weeks). After drying, you may remove the roots and greens, but leave about an inch of stem around the neck to seal the onion.
