(Basella rubra) While not a true spinach, this beautiful red-stemmed vining plant produces large, deep green leaves that have a remarkably “spinach-like” flavor. Often planted in the summer as an alternative to cool-season spinach, this variety flourishes in the heat. Equally good cooked or fresh.

Vigorous vines can reach 8 feet or more when trellised. Its scarlet red stems and glossy green leaves make it wonderful as an ornamental as well.
